One of the best ways to experience the northeast coast is from the water. Hiring a small boat for the day opens up a string of secluded coves, sea caves, and tiny beaches that are completely inaccessible by road. No boat licence is required for the smaller vessels — just a sense of adventure.
Where to Hire
Small motorboats (typically 5–7 metres with a 30hp outboard) can be hired from Kassiopi harbour or Agios Stephanos. Expect to pay around €80–120 for a full day including fuel. The hire companies will give you a quick briefing on the boat controls and a laminated map of the coast — it's all very straightforward.
Insider Tip
Book your boat the day before in high season (July–August). Ask for a boat with a canopy — you will appreciate the shade by midday.
A Suggested Route
From Kassiopi, head south along the coast towards Agni Bay. This stretch is particularly beautiful, with limestone cliffs dropping into deep blue water. Stop at any cove that catches your eye — you'll often have the whole beach to yourselves.

Pull into Agni Bay for lunch at one of the three waterfront tavernas. Toula's is our favourite — the staff will help you tie up right in front of the restaurant. After lunch, continue south past Kerasia towards Kouloura, one of the most photographed spots on the island.
What to Bring
Pack snorkelling gear, plenty of sunscreen, towels, and drinking water. A waterproof bag for phones and valuables is a wise investment. The water along this coast is exceptionally clear — the snorkelling is some of the best in Greece.
A boat day is the highlight of every trip. There is nothing quite like dropping anchor in a deserted cove and having the whole Ionian Sea to yourself.
Allow a full day for the experience — set off mid-morning and return by late afternoon. It's one of those days you'll talk about for years.
